Photo of the Week: Early Morning Riser, Red-winged Blackbird

March 21, 2021 By Deborah Edwards-Onoro

Black bird with red and yellow epaulets sings loudly as it perches on the bare tree branch.

The sounds of Red-winged Blackbirds filled the marsh in the early morning at Sterling State Park in Monroe, Michigan for the first official weekend of spring in Michigan.

Along with blackbirds, you could hear the territorial song of American Robins and the loud calls and squeals of Ring-billed Gulls as they foraged for food in the pond.

Double-crested Cormorants kept flying into the marsh as hundreds of Red-breasted Mergansers swam in the blue water of the ponds.

Soon the mergansers will continue their migration north as the cormorants settle in to the marshy area until fall.

Somehow we’ve managed to have true spring weather for the first weekend.

Sunny, blue skies, and temperatures in the 50 and 60 degree Farenheit made for a great weekend to enjoy being outside.

Photo of the Week: Ice Sheets on the Detroit River

February 28, 2021 By Deborah Edwards-Onoro

white ice sheets float down the blue open water of the Detroit River as it flows past Mud Island in Ecorse, Michigan.

Like many people in southeast Michigan, I’ve enjoyed the last few days of warmer weather and sunshine.

We’ve had temperatures reach the mid-50 degrees Farenheit over the weekend, it’s such a good feeling to have warm weather again!

Despite the fact we have snow mounds on our lawns and 10 to 20 feet tall snow piles in parking lots, spring is coming. Continue reading Photo of the Week: Ice Sheets on the Detroit River

Photo of the Week: Glory of the Snow in Bloom

April 5, 2020 By Deborah Edwards-Onoro

star-shaped white-centered blue flowers bloom closed to the wood mulch covered ground.

When we did landscaping work in the yard last fall, we removed a lot of old railroad ties from the raised beds in the front yard.

Which gave us an opportunity to replenish soil and plant some new bulbs and shrubs in the front bed.

We moved some of the soil from the front bed to the back yard and mulched the beds.

Never thinking of the possibility we may have unexpectedly moved some of our bulbs to the back yard.

Imagine my surprise this week when the blue flowers of the Glory of the Snow (Chionodoxa luciliae) flowers popped up in the back yard raised beds!

After the snowdrops and crocuses have bloomed, the Glory of the Snow are the next flowers to bloom in our southeastern Michigan garden.

How’s your garden growing?
