One of the few remaining structures from the 1800’s in our area is Cherry Hill United Methodist Church, located on the western edge of Canton, Michigan among some of the busiest housing development in western Wayne County. Founded in 1834, the church is celebrating its 180th anniversary this year.
Like many congregations in the early 1800’s, the congregation first met in people’s homes before building their first church in 1848. The current red-brick Gothic-style structure was built in 1882.
When we first moved to the area, I attended the church several times, met with the minister, and talked about mission work. It’s a traditional church inside, with wooden pews and beautiful stained glass windows with the names of the oldest families in the township.
