World Usability Day Detroit 2014: Quick Notes

I wasn’t sure what to expect this year for our second annual World Usability Day Detroit event. I was excited our Detroit User Experience group partnered with the Ladies That UX Detroit group to organize the event.

But I wondered if:

  • Attendees would enjoy the program
  • We would meet our goal to attract people who aren’t in the usability field
  • People who attended last year would return this year

And guess what?

I shouldn’t have worried.

Based on the positive comments from people who attended, they enjoyed the presentations from Cora Cowles and Dave Lingholm. Lively conversation and Q and A followed each of their talks.

About half of the people who attended were not in the usability field. I’ve been concerned over the past few years that World Usability Day has become an exclusive event for usability professionals.

And several people who attended World Usability Day Detroit last year returned for this year’s event.

We saw many new faces, including usability colleagues from Ann Arbor and Toledo, as well as students from Wayne State University.

It was fascinating to hear about the potty-training application Cora and her team worked on (Google Play | iTunes), as well as the Detroit Delivers application (Google Play | iTunes) and some of the other changes Dave said we’ll see soon on the City of Detroit website.

Here’s some of the Twitter conversation from tonight’s event:

Thanks to O’Reilly Media and an anonymous donor of Rosenfeld Media books, we had multiple books to give away to our attendees.

Congrats to all the winners!
