Why You Want to Publish on Your Own Site

I’ve shared my opinion many times about writing over the years with my friends, followers, and colleagues.

When you publish your writing, publish it on your own website.

A site you manage.

Not LinkedIn. Not Medium. Not the platform formerly known as Twitter. Not Mastodon.

Two months from now, people won’t find your insightful 18-paragraph LinkedIn post.

Even if they search for it.

Because Google doesn’t index all LinkedIn posts.

And folks won’t find your 10+ tweet thread.

Because many people stopped using the platform formerly known as Twitter, after it was sold.

As for Mastodon, there was no global search option until late 2023, other than to search for hashtags and people.

Which limits how you can find information or resources.

Every year there’s a new online publishing platform that catches attention from everyone.

In the past, it was Posterous for me. Then Storify.

Both platforms captured my attention with their ease of use and multiple features.

And that’s where I chose to publish my posts.

Unfortunately, both platforms closed down.

Users like me were left trying to migrate their Posterous posts or using a multi-step time-consuming process to save one Storify post at a time.

Publish on your own website.

You control your content, when you own your content.

For a future post, I’ll share my recommendations for choosing tools to publish on your own website.
