Mark your calendar! TEDxDetroit returns to Detroit, Michigan with a day of inspiration, creativity, and innovation on November 10, 2021.
Presented by United Wholesale Mortgage, TEDxDetroit is a full day event where local designers, educators, scientists, entrepreneurs, makers, artists, thinkers, and technology fans gather together to engage in ideas and connect with each other.
The goal: talk about, share, and celebrate positive ideas for the world from Detroit.
What is TEDxDetroit?
An outgrowth of the popular TED conference, TEDx events are locally-produced independent community events.
TEDxDetroit brings together local people to share a TED-like experience with a focus on technology, entertainment, and design in our Detroit community.
Over the years, I’ve attended over 25 TEDx events, including TEDxDetroit, TEDxUofM (University of Michigan), TEDxGR (Grand Rapids) and TEDxYDL (Ypsilanti District Library).
I was excited to attend my first TEDx event, the inaugural TEDxUofM in 2010 (my TEDxUofM 2010 Flickr photos) at the University of Michigan.
The event was limited to 300 people, somehow I managed to get one of the community tickets! (One of my friends at UM was jealous when they learned I landed a ticket, they tried but failed to get a ticket.)
In 2014, I chatted with Professor Anne Curzan about Frindle at TEDxUofM 2014.
That same year, I joined the TEDxDetroit team as a volunteer, working on the photography team.
I’ve mentioned before why I love TEDx events: the storytelling draws me in.
I’m fascinated with and love to hear about the successes of folks in the community.
Tickets and Event Info
This year’s event offers three ways to attend TEDxDetroit on November 10, 2021:
- Live theatre and TEDxLabs in-person
- Live viewing party and TEDxLabs
- Free livestreaming
The live in-person event will be held at the Icon Detroit Auditorium in Detroit, Michigan, which seats 350 people in stadium seating with individual armchairs, desks, power outlets, and wifi.
Register today, buy your $75 ticket to attend in-person.
The live viewing party and TEDxLabs will take place onsite at Icon Detroit, but not in the auditorium.
You’ll watch the event in socially distanced viewing salons, join in Q&A with speakers, explore TEDxLabs, and tour the campus on Detroit’s Riverfront.

Note: COVID vaccinations and masks are strongly encouraged to attend the in-person and live viewing party events. TEDxDetroit will follow State of Michigan capacity restrictions.
For everyone else who wants to participate in TEDxDetroit 2021, a free livestream will be available on the TEDxDetroit website.
Wrapping Up
TEDxDetroit is one of the events I look forward to attending every year. I love that the organizers came up with the idea of a hybrid event this year.
