When I learned the Tall Ships Challenge would be visiting Detroit, Michigan this month, I was thrilled!
And thought I would go on a tour of a tall ship and possibly a cruise down the Detroit River.
But with temperatures forecast in the high 80’s to mid-90’s Fahrenheit during the tall ships visit, and feels like temperatures in triple digits, I reconsidered.
I’m not a fan of hot weather. And do what I can to stay out of summer sun except for cool mornings and late evenings.
So, instead I chose to walk along the Detroit RiverWalk to see if I could get a look at the tall ships.
Where I found long lines of people waiting to board at 9:45AM, in the hot morning sun. (They have more patience and heat tolerance than me.)
This is the closest view I could get of the ships, without buying a ticket for the Sail Detroit festival.
Yes, the sails aren’t up since I was there when the ships were docked at Detroit’s Port Authority for tours.
Still I was glad to see the tall ships. It’s the first time they’ve been back to Detroit since the festival launched with 20 tall ships in Detroit in 2001.
