Photo of the Week: Turkey Sculpture at Environmental Interpretive Center

A shiny silver metal sculpture of a turkey with wings made of layered silver spoons and legs made from rebar. The turkey bends its neck toward the ground as it forages for food. A nearby hollow log made from metal files lies on the ground, with several shelf mushrooms growing horizontally from the log. The sculpture is surrounded by brown wood mulch. In the background are green-leaved native plants and shrubs.

A shiny metallic sculpture of a turkey marks the entrance walkway past the rain garden, a different type of bird for those of us gathered for an early morning bird hike.

Created by local artist Laura Steiner, the sculpture was installed at the University of Michigan-Dearborn Environmental Interpretive Center (EIC) in mid-August 2025.

Photo of the Week: Eliza Howell Park Stickwork

A hutlike structure with mutliple levels, the hand-woven branches form an incredible welcoming sculpture at the park entrance, inviting people to walk inside.

Within a few hundred feet after you enter Eliza Howell Park in northwest Detroit, you immediately see an amazing natural sculpture rising from the ground.

I was impressed when I saw it and wondered who created it, and how it was made.

From what I learned from Sidewalk Detroit, the organization that hosted the artist, the “Stickwork” sculpture was created by artist Patrick Dougherty.

Photo of the Week: Pointe Mouillee State Game Area Headquarters Birds Wood Sculpture

A honey-brown tree stump has been transformed into a beautiful wood sculpture of owl babies snuggled together topped off with a bald eagle. In the background you can see the two story state game area headquarters along with signs about the state game area.

We’ve not sure when this wood sculpture was completed, but I believe it was sometime in the past year.

We remember the large shade tree in front of the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area headquarters in southern Wayne County, Michigan that preceded this beautiful wood birds sculpture.
