Imagine having a first row seat to hear an excerpt of Handel’s Messiah performed by the nationally acclaimed Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings ensemble accompanied by the Kirk in the Hills Choir.

That’s how I enjoyed my evening last night at the 47th annual Noel Night in midtown Detroit, where the performance took place in the amazing Rivera Court at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Did you recognize the character?

I admit I had to look at in my smart phone camera before I could identify who it was: Kevin from the Home Alone Christmas comedy movie.

Built entirely of canned goods, the sculpture was one of several canstructions I saw at the Wayne State University Welcome Center this weekend as part of Detroit’s annual Noel Night celebration.

One of my favorite nights of the year is Noel Night. Celebrated the first Saturday evening in December, the midtown area in Detroit is shutdown to celebrate the holidays with more than 200 performances and exhibits by choirs, musicians, and artists at museums, libraries, Wayne State University, businesses, and churches.
