Photo of the Week: Mississagi Freighter on the Detroit River

January 5, 2020 By Deborah Edwards-Onoro

Mississagi freighter travels along the Detroit River

While I do a fair amount of bird watching at Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan, one of other hobbies I enjoy while I’m on the island is watching the freighters on the Detroit River.

It’s fun to see the Algowood in the fog or Dorothy Ann-Pathfinder traveling the waters on their way upbound to the Soo Locks or downbound to Windsor or cities further south.

Photo of the Week: Mission Hill Cemetery Overlook in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

October 20, 2019 By Deborah Edwards-Onoro

Golden orange, yellow, and red trees surround the blue waters of Spectacle Lake and Lake Superiors.

About 20 miles west of Sault Ste. Marie in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is one of my favorite places to see autumn colors in our state.

Mission Hill Overlook, across from the Mission Hill Cemetery in Brimley Michigan overlooks Spectacle Lake, Lake Superior, Whitefish Bay, and Sault Ste. Marie.

To get to the overlook, you drive up a steep incline on a narrow asphalt one-lane road, with hardwood trees on each side of the road.

It feels like you’re in a tunnel of trees, only dappled light makes it way through the shadows.

Cliffs on the north edge of the road drop more than 50 feet, raising every driver’s heartbeat a bit as they drive to the overlook. Continue reading Photo of the Week: Mission Hill Cemetery Overlook in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Photo of the Week: Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse

October 13, 2019 By Deborah Edwards-Onoro

light brown brick lighthouse with red roof with castle-like architecture, with Straits of Mackinac in the background.

It was a cold, windy, rainy day when I stopped along the beach of Lake Huron to take this shot of Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse at the tip of Michigan’s mitten in the Lower Peninsula.

One of three lighthouses along the narrows of the Straits of Mackinac, the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse joined the McGulpin Point Lighthouse and Bois Blanc Lighthouse in guiding ships through the treacherous straits where Lake Huron meets Lake Michigan.
