Web Design Process, More or Less: Refresh Detroit July 2011

July 14, 2011 By Deborah Edwards-Onoro

This week at Refresh Detroit, we had the pleasure of hosting Maria Gosur and Colleen Case for their talk about the web design process.

My key takeaways: it’s an ongoing process of five phases which overlap.

Know your goals and identify deliverables for each phase. Clients are your content experts. Project debrief informs you on what worked/didn’t work and how you can improve future projects.

Here’s some of the social conversation from their talk:

Thanks to @Peachpit for providing the book by @thebrainlady for tonight's #refreshdetroit giveaway.

The context of the message is blended with the medium more and more on the web. #refreshdetroit

— brentmitch (@brentmitch) July 13, 2011

Think of development stages like Jazz Festival stages. They happen concurrently. #refreshdetroit

— phill tran (@philltran) July 13, 2011

5 stages in the process: define project, scope of project, info architecture, build & integrate site, publishing. #refreshdetroit

— Refresh Detroit (@refreshdetroit) July 13, 2011

Sticky notes are a great way to visualize information and recognize patterns. #refreshdetroit

— Nick DeNardis (@nickdenardis) July 13, 2011

Narrowcast rather then broadcast your message. Make the visitor feel like the site was tailor made for them individually. #refreshdetroit.

— phill tran (@philltran) July 13, 2011

Site testing is part of every step. Not just devices, but also usability, design objectives & goals. #refreshdetroit

RT @nickdenardis: We consume web content as snacks, not meals. We scan, pick and choose what to interact with. #refreshdetroit

— David Brooks (@davidnbrooks) July 14, 2011

Had a great time speaking @refreshdetroit. Thanks @nickdenardis @redcrew for putting together a great event

— Maria Gosur (@mariagosur) July 14, 2011

One City.
Twenty Years.
Thousands of Walkers.
Millions of Dollars Raised.

According to the Detroit Free Press, over 40,000 people ran, walked, or jogged at the 20th Annual Race for the Cure on May 21, 2011 in Detroit, Michigan to raise funds for breast cancer research.

I was one of them.

Take a look at my photos from the walk.

President Obama on Facebook Live Town Hall

April 20, 2011 By Deborah Edwards-Onoro

Facebook Live scored a win today at its town hall meeting with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg hosting United States President Barack Obama. Held at Facebook headquarters in California, what made the town hall event amazing (to me) were the live questions asked via the Facebook wall and the audience who attended.

President Barack Obama Facebook Town Hall logo

The event started out low key with the President introducing himself:

My name is Barack Obama and I’m the guy who got Mark (Zuckerman) to wear a jacket and tie.

One of the first people in the audience to ask President Obama a question identified herself as a Facebook employee originally from Detroit Michigan. Her question allowed President Obama to comment on government investments making a difference “… we essentially saved the U.S. auto industry.”

Key comments from President Obama during the town hall:

  • Government alone can’t do it. We need a shift in America culture. Let’s make science cool.
  • We’ve got to lift our game up when it comes to science, math and technology. That’s hopefully the greatest legacy I can have as President of the United States
  • We are both a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. What’s undeniable is America is a nation of immigrants. That’s what makes us stronger.
  • Why can’t we eliminate the $4 billion in tax breaks to oil companies and invest that money instead in alternative energy?

Here are a few screenshots I captured during the town hall meeting.
