As I transition WordPress sites to the block editor, one of the most challenging issues I’ve had is with nested blocks.

For example, in the GeneratePress theme, I use Generate Blocks to create complex layouts with rows and columns.

Which for some designs means I’ll create a content section for a page with a Container block.

Then I’ll add a Grid block.

Within each grid item, I’ll add paragraphs, lists, or images.

Takeaways from Rethinking Themes: Embracing Atomic Design with Gutenberg

In her Rethinking Themes: Embracing Atomic Design with Gutenberg presentation at the online WordCamp Denver 2020, Michelle Schulp discussed atomic design principles, how they apply to Gutenberg, and how WordPress users can start thinking of content as building blocks.

I first met Michele eight years ago, when she attended our WordCamp Detroit 2012 event. I remember chatting about design, WordPress, and conferences.

Over the years, we’ve met up at WordCamp Phoenix as well as WordCamp Orlando and WordCamp US.

Michele designs and builds digital interfaces, works on UX design and strategy as well as front-end development. She runs her own company MarkTime Media.

What You Need to Know about WordPress 5.4 Block Editor Fullscreen Mode Enabled by Default

The release of WordPress 5.4, scheduled for March 31, 2020, brings a number of new features, bug fixes, and security improvements which impact the user experience.

As an organizer for two WordPress meetup groups, I’ve heard from many WordPress users, designers, and developers who are excited about the numerous updates included in WordPress 5.4.

Sadly, one feature I was looking forward to, native lazy loading images, has been postponed to the WordPress 5.5 release.

While we wait for the official release this week, a reminder that as with any major WordPress release, make sure you’re prepared to test the new version on a test site before applying the changes to any live site.

Which is why I want to highlight an important change that impacts WordPress users using the Block Editor.
