When news spread beavers had returned to Belle Isle in 2012, after almost 100 years away, people were excited!

An indicator species for successful wildlife management and habitat restoration, beavers returning to Belle Isle was positive news for Detroit River water quality.

Unfortunately, recently, the beavers’ hard work on the island has resulted in many trees being damaged and felled.

With a cold breeze off the Detroit River and temperatures at the freezing mark, it’s no surprise I found the Frozen Planet variety of dwarf iris in bloom this weekend at Oudolf Garden Detroit. Photo of the Week: Red-Shouldered Shield Bug

You wouldn’t think you’d see many insects in winter around Detroit.

Given the cold, below freezing, temperatures, most insects have hunkered down for the winter months.

But you can’t miss the lime green insect with long multi-colored antennae and red shoulders on the edge of the Belle Isle Nature Center parking lot.
