Share Your Favorite Plugin: Duplicate Post

Remember that post you published last year, the one where you reviewed a new writing application?

You’ve found another app that you want to publish a review for, and you want to follow the same format.

But you don’t want to retype everything from scratch.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could duplicate your post? And update the content for your new review?

Duplicate Post

One way you can copy an existing post or page is with the Duplicate Post plugin, a free plugin available in the WordPress plugin directory.

Rather than writing from scratch, you can quickly clone a post or page, and use the formatting and content in the original post/page you created.

After installing and activating the plugin, you have five different ways to copy a post or page.

In list of Pages or Posts, select Clone option below the post/page title
To duplicate more than one post, in the list of Pages or Posts, select multiple items. Choose Clone in the Bulk Actions dropdown menu at the bottom of the listing.
In list of Pages or Posts, select New Draft option below the post/page title (similar to the first option)
In the Post edit screen, select Copy to a new draft option from Publish
In a post or page, select Copy to a new draft from the admin bar

There are many plugins that have similar functionality to Duplicate Post. Why have I chosen to use Duplicate Post?

In addition to the various ways to copy a page/post, you can:

Add a template tag to your WordPress templates, to clone your posts/pages
Customize what is copied: text, tags, categories, etc. (check the Developers Guide)
Restrict the option to copy a post to certain user roles or post types (check the plugin documentation)

I’ve enjoyed using Duplicate Post over the years; it’s made it simple for me copy an existing post or page. And it’s saved me lots of time.
