Quick Tip: How to Get/Reset Your Google Voice PIN

With changes announced in early 2022 that Legacy Google Voice was going away, many longtime Google Voice users needed to take action to set up a Google Voice PIN.

Which many did, including me, before the Legacy interface was removed.

Since Legacy Google Voice has been retired, there’s a new interface for getting/resetting your Google Voice PIN.

And I’ve updated this blog post to reflect the new steps.

How to Get or Reset Your Google Voice PIN

To set a PIN, use a browser on your laptop or desktop computer. (I don’t use Google Voice on mobile, so I don’t know the instructions to follow on mobile.)

  1. Sign into the Google/Gmail account for your Google Voice phone number

  2. Visit Google Voice settings to confirm your Google Voice phone number displays on the page (and you’re signed into the correct account)

  3. Select Voicemail in the sidebar navigation

  4. Turn on Call to listen and select Reset PIN in that section

  5. Enter your PIN

Now you can use the PIN when you want to check your Google Voice voicemail.

Or when you port your Google Voice phone number to another mobile service provider.

My History With Google Voice

I’ve been a Google Voice user since before it was Google Voice.

Yes, Google Voice is yet another one of the products Google bought and eventually renamed.

The service was originally called Grand Central.

When Google renamed Grand Central to Google Voice, my old Grand Central account was grandfathered in.

Since Google Voice provided the option to forward all text and voice messages to email, which is the setting I’ve had for years, I always picked up messages via my email account.

I never set up the PIN to access messages.

Which wasn’t a big issue in the past. Until Legacy Google Voice was retired.

Summary

Glad Google finally updated their interface to allow you to get/reset your PIN. Thanks to one of my blog readers, Elyor Vali, who notified me of the interface change.

Appreciate you letting me know!
