Quick Tip: 5 Ally Actions Newsletter

As I’ve said before, one of the reasons I enjoy Twitter is finding helpful  resources and newsletters.

The web design, accessibility, user experience, and WordPress communities have always been welcoming to me on Twitter, offering recommendations and tips for the questions I ask.

I’ve found solutions for WordPress site issues, learned about privacy-focused site analytics, and discovered a number of focused newsletters that help me with my web projects.

Which is why I want to share a newsletter I’ve subscribed to recently: 5 Ally Actions from Better Allies.

What is 5 A11y Actions?

Created by Karen Catlin, 5 Ally Actions is a weekly newsletter published on Fridays highlighting 5 simple actions to create a more inclusive workplace.

From meetings to greetings to salary range discussions during interviews and more, Catlin offers practical advice you can use in your work.

In the June 11, 2021 newsletter, Catlin wrote about being upfront about the salary range for a job opportunity.

She shared advice Emily Nakashima, VP of Engineering at Honeycomb, posted on Twitter:

Nakashima followed up her tweet with benefits, including:

Makes it clear you won’t lowball candidates who are already underpaid or have concerns about negotiating.

In her newsletter, Catlin pointed out that benefit is crucial for women and people of color, who are often underpaid compared to white male men.
