I was caught off guard today when I explained to a user how to fill in form fields on a form.
The user said “What are form fields?” I pointed to the areas on the form, and the user replied, “I call those spaces or text boxes.”
Their response made me wonder what people call the areas that are filled out in forms.
I’m not looking for the “developer” term; I’m looking for the “person filling out the form” term.
For example, you need to fill out a registration form. What do you call the area where you enter your first name?
So I ran an online poll, asking people:
What do you call the area a person fills in on a form?
Almost 40 people participated in the poll.
Poll Results
Unfortunately Poll Everywhere doesn’t display the poll correctly across all browsers, so I had to take a screenshot of the poll results.
And the winner is “field” followed closely by the term “form field.”
Not sure what happened, but the poll from PollEverywhere disappeared on the post. (People using Chrome, Internet Explorer and Firefox on Windows 7, Windows XP, and Windows Vista aren’t seeing the poll results in the post.)
I’m troubleshooting with the folks from PollEverywhere.
Turns out the latest Posterous updates caused the issue with the bar chart not working correctly. Styles seem to be missing from the stylesheet. Posterous plans to post the fix soon. Waiting for confirmation from Posterous the fix has been uploaded.
