Photo of the Week: Yellow Crocus in Bloom

Another sign of spring: my yellow crocus are finally blooming.

I’ve never understood why my yellow crocus always bloom two weeks or up to two months later than my purple crocus.

I’ll usually see purple crocus leaves sprouting in late January, when we have a warm January, or early to mid-February when we have typical winter with snow and cold.

That’s what happened this year, when we had a cold and extended winter season.

The purple crocus leaves sprouted February 17. And the purple crocus flowers bloomed March 9, three weeks after their leaves sprouted.

The yellow crocus leaves didn’t sprout until about a week ago. But the flowers don’t take as long to start blooming as the purple crocus, they started blooming less than a week after the leaves sprouted.

Today, all but two of my purple crocus are done blooming.
