Living near the Great Lakes gives you amazing opportunities to travel to interesting places, whether it’s the beautiful Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on Lake Superior in Michigan, Coventry Garden in Windsor, Ontario overlooking the Detroit River, or the magnificent Niagara Falls.
Years ago, we drove around Lake Michigan and had a fantastic time in the Upper Peninsula, Door County in Wisconsin, and walking along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Chicago, Illinois.
Last month we decided it was time to do another around-the-Great-Lake tour, this time around Lake Erie over Memorial Day weekend.
Have to say it was a lot faster driving around Lake Erie than Lake Michigan!
The smaller lake meant we had time to spend in several places along the lake, birdwatching, walking through the downtown area, and checking lakeshore parks.

In addition to traveling in two countries, we saw:
- Beautiful spring birds in migration at the southernmost point of Canada
- Stunning architecture in Buffalo, New York, and
- Gorgeous sunset in Toledo, Ohio
before we finally made our way home.
Check out photos from some of the places we traveled through in Michigan, Ontario, New York, and Ohio.
Now we have to find a way (and time!) to travel around Lake Huron, Lake Superior, and Lake Ontario!
When you go around lake Ontario be sure to add the Royal Botanical Gardens to your itinery. It’s located in Burlington (near Hamilton).
My wife & I visited last year and it was time & money well spent!
Thank you, Howard. Glad to hear your recommendation! Any photos or blog post to share of your visit at the gardens?
It’s on my list, we debated going to the gardens or spending time in Buffalo over Memorial Day. Buffalo won out, but we’re hoping to make it back to the Hamilton area before the end of the year to visit the gardnes.
