Photo of the Week: In the End There Will Be Sunflowers

On the side of Iraqi Bakery in Detroit’s Cody Rouge neighbohood on the far west side, you’ll found a brightly colored wall mural that captures your attention as you head east on West Warren.

A musician playing a trumpet in a field of tall golden yellow sunflowers looks upward toward the deep blue sky with fluffy white clouds as the sunrays shine down.

Created by Detroit artist, 2017 Kresge Art Fellow, and filmmaker Nicole Macdonald, the mural was part of Detroit’s 2022 City Walls project which partnered with Cody Rouge Action Alliance.

What a striking mural!

Macdonald is known for her public art installations throughout the city of Detroit. I found almost two dozen of Macdonald’s murals highlighted on the Murals and Street Art (MASA) map.

There’s likely more of her installations in Detroit, I just haven’t found them. Yet.

Despite searching online, I wasn’t able to learn who the musician is featured in the mural.

I’ve learned from reading about other Macdonald murals, she often highlights local Detroit community members.

If you know who the musician is in this mural, let me know in the comments.
