Photo of the Week: Swans on the Detroit River

Yesterday was my first time visiting Dingell Park, part of the Downriver Delta Greenway along the Detroit River in Ecorse, Michigan.

It was an unexpected pleasure to see so many waterbirds at the park! Earlier in the day, I had read on ebird that another birder reported seeing over 60 swans on the river.

Given the below zero Farenheit temperatures we’ve had in the past couple weeks in southeast Michigan, I was surprised and didn’t expect so many swans would still be in Michigan.

Earlier in the afternoon, I had seen less than 10 swans at Belle Isle State Park.

Imagine my surprise when I arrived at Dingell Park near dusk to discover open water and over 140 swans on the river.

Including these couple dozen swans who had already snuggled their head under their wing for the night.
