Kudos to my friend Sam White and her Shakespeare in Detroit team for a great production of Romeo and Juliet last night.
Hundreds of people gathered in Grand Circus Park in downtown Detroit for a modern interpretation of the Shakespeare play. No set or props were used, which leant to a focus on the words and your imagination.
The scenes between Romeo and Juliet were endearing and touching. The fight scene between Romeo and Paris was impressive, as the two sparred with each other on stage with jabs and flips so realistic I hoped neither was hurt.
Last night’s performance was the second Shakespeare in Detroit play I’ve seen this summer, and I’ve had a blast watching both performances under the stars.
If you’re looking to enjoy Shakespeare in the park this summer, I invite you to attend the August 6th performance of “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” in Grand Circus Park. The plays are free; you just have to bring your own lawn chair.
