The reappearance of Ospreys in spring is one of our true signs of spring!
Birders in southeast Michigan have been reporting Osprey sightings for the past week, so I went out birding in search of my first-of-year Osprey a couple days ago.
And quickly found it!
Perched on a cell tower in eastern Washtenaw County where for over five years I’ve watched an Osprey pair raise their young.
This week’s photo was taken along western Lake Erie, near a marina where an artificial nesting platform has been installed.
One of my favorite birding locations, I’ve watched for the past three years as Osprey pairs successfully raise their young.
Their nest, a pile of branches and sticks atop the large, maybe 30-foot-tall pole, is much easier to view from a distance than the cell tower.
I saw one Osprey sitting on the nest before it flew off to a nearby leafless tree.
Where I was delighted to spy another Osprey, not more than 10 feet away in the tree.
If you’re interested in learning more about Osprey migration, the Osprey Journey project in New York conducted a fascinating two-year research project.
