Photo of the Week: Native Plants at Belle Isle State Park

When I went birding at Belle Isle State Park this weekend, I found black fabric lining the shoreline as a type of fence around a majority of the park.

I didn’t know what it was, so I stopped at the Nature Center to ask the staff.

They didn’t know, but a security guard said that often happens when they’re working on the trails around the park.

Except I found the black fabric along portions of the shoreline that had no nearby trail.

It wasn’t until I rounded the perimeter road past the Detroit Yacht Club where I found this banner from the State Parks of the state of Michigan that I may have figured it out.

The black fabric may be protecting recently planted native plants on the shoreline from being trampled by park visitors.
