Photo of the Week: Murals in the Market 2017

Last year, fall took on a different meaning for me beyond enjoying local apple cider, viewing gorgeous falls colors, and gathering the last vegetables from the garden.

That’s when I first visited the Murals in the Market international mural festival at Eastern Market in Detroit.

What a fantastic event, watching artists draw and paint their murals on the walls of buildings in Detroit’s Market District!

Murals in the Market has now become an annual event for me, a walkabout on a fall day to marvel at the beautiful murals created by local and international artists.

Now in its third year, I learned this year’s Murals in the Market international mural festival featured more than 50 artists from as far away as Germany, Australia, and Hawaii.

While the murals can be seen from the sidewalk on the outside building walls, some can only be viewed behind fenced lots on the weekend. Which is how I managed to take the photo of Iverson’s mural.

More than 100 public murals can now be found throughout the streets of the Market District.

Next time you visit Eastern Market to get your favorite local produce, poultry, and meats, take some time to walk about the Market District and discover the murals.
