Photo of the Week: Ice-Covered Lake Erie

This week’s photo of the week shows an ice-covered Lake Erie, as seen this weekend from the shoreline of Sterling State Park in Monroe, Michigan.

With the frigid weather we’ve had since mid-January, it’s not surprising to learn Lake Erie is now over 95% frozen.

On January 14, 2026, Lake Erie was only 2% ice-covered.

Could Lake Erie be completely covered with ice this winter?

Maybe.

If it happens, it will be the first time in 30 years Lake Erie is completely frozen.

Since modern record keeping started in the early 1970’s, Lake Erie has been completely frozen only three times: 1978, 1979, and 1996.
