Photo of the Week: Great Blue Heron on the Detroit River

No need to travel to an amusement park when you can float on ice floating downstream on the Detroit River.

Facing backwards.

At least for the Great Blue Heron I saw this weekend standing on one leg on one of the bigger ice sheets in the shipping channel.

With this weekend’s warmer temperatures, I knew it wouldn’t be long before ice sheets on the Detroit River would melt.

So I headed down to Belle Isle State Park to watch the ice sheets float by.

Some were small sheets, where I saw American herring gulls as well as Bald eagles standing on the floating ice. But other sheets were quite large.

As it turns out, the melting snow has caused a haze over southeast Michigan.

Which is why my photo appears a bit fuzzy.

The haze also prompted an air quality advisory in southeast Michigan, due to lack of wind.
