I remember when the Renaissance Center (RenCen) was built in downtown Detroit in the 1970’s. The “city-within-a-city” urban renewal project along the Detroit River was the talk of our area when it opened in 1977.
For several decades, the seven tall towers of the RenCen have defined downtown Detroit’s skyline.
Almost fifty years later, with General Motors relocating its world headquarters from the RenCen to the new Hudson’s Detroit building (Wayback Machine), it’s not clear what the future is for the RenCen.
Given several news stories about demolition of towers, including an in-depth Bloomberg story detailing potential elimination of two towers, I wanted to get a photo of the RenCen before any changes took place.
This photo was taken from William G. Milliken State Park looking northwest toward the RenCen.
