Diana Ross, Jack White, Big Sean, and the Clark Sisters are a few of the many performers participating in this week’s opening night concert at Michigan Central in Detroit.
The free public concert kicks off a 10-day celebration of the public opening of the former abandoned Detroit train station in the Corktown neighborhood.
Another example of Detroit’s continuing revitalization, the renovation of Michigan Central by Ford Motor Company caught the attention of media throughout the country and the world.
Since 1988 when it closed, the abandoned train station was often pointed to as a symbol of Detroit’s decline.
Excitement Caused Registration Crash
When registration for Michigan Central’s free public tours and opening night concert opened in late May 2024, overwhelming demand caused the registration website to crash.
I know, I was one of the people trying to register!
They closed registration and reopened it the following day.
Despite trying multiple times, I couldn’t get tickets to attend either the concert or public tours in person.
Tickets for the concert sold out in five minutes!
So I’ll be watching the 90-minute concert on our local Detroit TV station which is broadcasting it live and livestreaming it.

Summary
I can’t wait to see the opening night concert! And I hope to visit Michigan Central on Friday or Saturday this summer, when no registration is required.
If you can’t watch the live concert, NBC is airing a one-hour primetime special on Sunday, June 9 at 7:00pm Eastern Daylight Time (check timezone for primetime special in your area).
Wondering about the Michigan Central Station photo for this post? I took it in September 2017, during the special light show during Detroit Homecoming.
