International Day of Persons with Disability: December 3, 2013

Tuesday, December 3 marks the 22nd annual International Day of Persons with Disability (IDPD).

The theme for this year is “Break Barriers, Open Doors: for an inclusive society and development for all.”

Promoted by the United Nations, IDPD events will be held around the world to raise awareness and understanding of disability issues as well celebrate achievements over the past year.

According to the United Nations Factsheet on People with Disabilities:

  • Around 15% of the world’s population, or estimated 1 billion people, live with disabilities
  • 80% of persons with disabilities live in developing countries
  • In countries where life expectancy is over 70 years, people spend on average about 8 years, or 11.5% of their life span, living with disabilities
  • About 386 million of the world’s working-age people have some kind of disability

I searched for, but couldn’t find any International Day of Persons with Disability events in Michigan, though I found several in Ohio.

If you know of any IDPD events in Michigan, please share them in the comments.
