Imagine you’ve returned from lunch and you’re getting ready to continue your work project from the morning.
Before you start, you take 10 minutes to visit LinkedIn, to catch up on the latest news in your industry and learn what your colleagues have recently published.
Only to have loud audio from an embedded video play automatically in your LinkedIn feed.
Argh. How distracting!
Has that happened to you? It’s happened to me. And I don’t like it.
Does Anyone Like Autoplay Videos?
Personally, I’m annoyed with autoplay video. On any site, app, or social media channel.
How about you?
Unfortunately, enabling video autoplay seems to be a trend.
I truly wonder if any website, social media channel, or application conducts usability tests on autoplay videos.
Imagine anyone saying,
Sure, I love to have video with loud audio start automatically whenever I visit your website!
And if it’s happening while you’re on your smartphone, you can max out your data plan, and start incurring additional charge.
Now, it’s not only annoying. It’s expensive.
How to Stop Videos from Autoplaying in LinkedIn
When I researched disabling LinkedIn video autoplay today, I discovered my Twitter friend Christopher McMullen had just tweeted about it this morning.

He quickly received a reply from LinkedIn Help, apologizing, with a link to disable video autoplay in LinkedIn.
Glad Christopher was able to get a quick response.
LinkedIn’s instructions are great, but are missing screenshots.
So I added screenshots along with my instructions for disabling autoplay videos on the desktop:
- Select the Me icon (the one with your avatar) from the menu bar on your LinkedIn homepage
- In the Account section, select Settings & Privacy
- In the Basics section, scroll to Autoplay videos and select Change
- Select the toggle to change the setting to No
- Select Close
Note: you’ll need to disable autoplay video in LinkedIn for every device you’ve installed it on.
Disable LinkedIn Video Autoplay on Android or iOS
- Select your profile picture
- Select the Settings icon in your profile
- In the Account tab, select Autoplay videos
- In the list of options, select Never Autoplay Videos
While I’m frustrated that autoplay videos seems to be the default for many social media channels, including LinkedIn, at least we can disable it.
