Remember the birthday celebration video you shared on Facebook with your grandmother who lives out-of-state? You were sad when she couldn’t understand what people were saying because she’s hard of hearing.
Here’s your chance to help her enjoy Uncle Bob’s jokes and all the shared memories in the video.
Facebook today announced the ability to add captions to videos as you upload them, as well as to videos you have already uploaded to Facebook.
According to the Facebook Help page, the new functionality is only available in English in the United States.
It’s not available for mobile phones or tablets.
To add captions to a Facebook video, you’ll need to create captions in the SubRip (.srt) file format.
Detailed steps for adding the captions file to the videos can be found on the Facebook Help Page, How do I add captions to videos?
It’s great to see the continuing accessibility improvements from the Facebook Accessibility Team. Their August 2014 Monthly Update reported improvements in iOS, Instagram Feed tab, as well as additional and improved labels.
Since there was no indication of when support for other languages and devices is expected, I asked the Facebook Accessibility team about their road map. When I hear back, I’ll update the post.
