Celebrating the Holiday at the 90th America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

It’s our first year here. I can’t believe how much fun it is to see the parade in person!

The young women and her husband sat next to me on the sidewalk along Woodward Avenue.

We quickly exchanged names as we settled in to watch the parade. Her two young children oohed and aahed as the parade floats slowly traveled by us.

Despite waking up late this morning, I scrambled out of bed and in ten minutes I was on the road.

I wasn’t going to miss this year’s America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Detroit.

Today’s parade commemorated the 90th anniversary of the parade that started in 1924 by the J.L. Hudson Company department store (the parade was suspended in 1943 and 1944 during World War II).

I was glad for today’s relatively warm weather (around 40 degrees) as I sat in the front row seat on Woodward Avenue next to the Wayne State University campus.

Thankfully, there were no winds today and the balloon handlers had no trouble spinning the large balloons, much to the delight of the parade watchers.

Clowns and parade walkers stopped by to shake hands with Beth’s two young children and share candy canes and necklaces.

The marching bands were amazing, their hours of practice paid off as they walked in sync down Woodward Avenue while performing Christmas songs.

At the end of the parade, we all started packing up our things. Beth asked me if I could take some shots of her family before we left.

Of course, I replied.

We’re coming back next year to this same spot, Beth said. Shall we keep a spot open for you?

Sure! I’ll see you next year!

If you celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope you’re enjoying a wonderful holiday with your friends and family.
