How to Allow Other People to Add Captions to Your YouTube Videos

Updated September 28, 2020: Sadly, YouTube removed the feature for people to contribute community captions.

In July 2018, I wrote about how my one tweet led to Troy Hunt’s YouTube HTTPS series getting translated into 16+ languages.

I kicked off getting the series captioned by asking Hunt to enable YouTube community contributions. Once he turned contributions on, I added English captions to the first two videos.

Takeaways from 2019 Digital Accessibility Trends with Tim Springer, Founder of Level Access

Thanks to Accessibility New York City (A11y NYC) livestreaming their April 2018 meetup last night, I was able to attend Tim Springer’s presentation 2019 Digital Accessibility Trends.

I didn’t know much about Springer’s background, he’s been doing accessibility work for 20 years. He started his accessibility journey when he was an undergraduate student at Stanford University.

Now CEO at Level Access, Springer developed Level Access’s core technology and led development of InFocus, the first commercial web accessibility testing software.

How to Add Alternative Text to LinkedIn Images

Note: as of late August 2019, LinkedIn may automatically add alt text to images. Check their alt text online help for more details. 

Yesterday, I had a chat about alternative text for images with my Twitter colleague Stanford Griffin.

He asked about managing alternative text for images in Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

We talked about how Buffer and Hootsuite offered support for alternative text for images in Twitter.

We spoke about adding alternative text for images in Instagram.

And then we started talking about LinkedIn’s alternative text for images.

Similar to Facebook who added alternative text last year, LinkedIn added the alternative text feature but didn’t announce it.

I don’t understand why neither social media company didn’t announce the highly requested feature to their users.
