Ask a birder about finding owls, and their advice will be to go out at dawn or dusk. Or the middle of the night to hear the owls calling.

But not if you’re looking for Short-eared Owls.

Which are one of the few owls active during the day and night, especially during breeding season.

Photo of the Week: Short-Eared Owl

Short-eared owl flying over winter weeds, sunlight shining through wings

One of the few owls you’ll see active during the day, the Short-Eared Owl was a beautiful sight in the sky as it silently flew over farm fields and vacant land on the eastern portion of Washtenaw County.

I took the photo of the owl last week, before five inches of snow covered southeastern Michigan.
