For any birder who arrived at the Magee Marsh boardwalk in northwest Ohio this month, a can’t miss May event for birders across the country to view the annual warbler arrival during spring migration, they might have been unexpectedly surprised by the signs and locked gate at the entrance and exit.

My bird sighting last week at a nearby birding hotspot caught me by surprise: the Upland Sandpiper has arrived in southeast Michigan.
When I checked my past bird sightings, I learned I usually see Upland Sandpipers in early May.
