Photo of the Week: Cloud Reflections in Lake Erie

A lake scene in which the blue sky and fluffy white clouds in the sky are reflected in calm blue water. In the foreground, the rocky shoreline frames the photo. In the distance on the lake, you can see small black shapes of waterfowl, including Common Merganser and Mallards.

If you didn’t know this photo was taken in the past week, in the cold of a southeast Michigan winter with temperatures barely in the double digits Fahrenheit, you might think today’s photo of the week was taken on a warm day.

But it you look carefully in the rocks along the shoreline, you’ll notice white patches of snow and ice.

On a cold, wintry Sunday morning in southeast Michigan where it’s been snowing for the past two hours, browsing the bright flower and delicious looking vegetable photos in this year’s Seed Savers Exchange seed catalog brightens my day.

Photo of the Week: Detroit River Hawk Watch

Each fall, starting in early September I make almost weekly treks to Lake Erie Metropark on the western shore of Lake Erie to view one of the most impressive fall hawk migrations in North America.

This year marks the 43rd year of the Detroit River Hawk Watch (DRHW), where thousands of raptors can be seen streaming over the Lake Erie Metropark boat launch during fall migration.
