Along with dozens of other birders in southeast Michigan and beyond, I traveled to Lake Erie Metropark in Brownstown Township, Michigan in late May to look for the slender Wilson’s Phalarope, a rare shorebird for Wayne County, Michigan.

Smaller and more slender than a Killdeer, the Wilson’s Phalarope has a needle-thin black bill, cinnamon colored neck, white breast, broad black strip on the gray back, with lanky black legs during breeding season. Continue reading Photo of the Week: Wilson’s Phalarope at Lake Erie Metropark

Photo of the Week: Bald Eagles on the Frozen Ice

When I saw the pair of Bald Eagles standing on the frozen ice of the marsh at Lake Erie Metropark, it looked to me the birds were in deep discussion.

I first saw the eagles flying low over the treetops and when they disappeared from sight, I suspected they might have landed on the ice.

I drove toward the open marsh, passing a flock of about 150 American Robins foraging berries in the dense shrubs lining the road.

At this year’s Hawkfest at Lake Erie Metropark in Brownstown Township, Michigan, I took the short hike from the Marshlands Museum and Nature Center along the Cherry Island Trail and boardwalk down to the boat launch to view the migrating hawks.
