Photo of the Week: Purple Finch at Our Feeder

September 13, 2020 By Deborah Edwards-Onoro

Raspberry-colored medium-sized bird perches on edge of green bird feeder.

“Wait a minute,” I said to my husband as I peered at the feeder in our side yard this weekend.

“That bird doesn’t look like the brown-colored House Finches.

It looks like it has a raspberry wash over it.”

And the other House Finches on the feeder didn’t seem very happy with it.

The raspberry-colored bird kept chasing the other birds away from the feeder. Continue reading Photo of the Week: Purple Finch at Our Feeder

Photo of the Week: Common Gallinule

July 19, 2020 By Deborah Edwards-Onoro

gray and brown marsh bird wades along the edge of the Lake Erie marsh looking for food.

Check out those green legs of the Common Gallinule!

It’s been over 20 years since I saw my first Common Gallinule, but I’ve only seen their long green legs in the past two years.

The unexpected leg color always makes me smile.

I remember the first time I saw a Common Gallinule, in the mid 1990’s, in a marsh near the Houston, Texas airport.

The bright red bill and brilliant yellow forehead shield made it easy for me to quickly identify the marsh bird as it swam in the shallow water and disappeared into the reeds.

Fast forward 10 years and I’m seeing the Common Gallinule every spring as it migrates north to one of its breeding areas in Ohio and Michigan, where I see it in Lake Erie marshes.

It’s not often I see one in summer.

Photo of the Week: Yellow-crowned Night Heron

June 21, 2020 By Deborah Edwards-Onoro

Gray bird perched on log, with black and white face, yellow crown, and long yellow plumes on back of head and back.

Word spread quickly in our southeast Michigan birding community when the Yellow-crowned Night Heron was reported at a popular birding spot in Washtenaw County.

By the time I arrived in the evening, just before dusk, more than two dozen birders and photographers had already posted their sighting of the medium-sized heron.

What was everyone excited about? Continue reading Photo of the Week: Yellow-crowned Night Heron
