Imagine my surprise this weekend when I saw not one, but three Common Loons in southeast Michigan.
Typically I only get to see one Common Loon during spring migration, seeing three was a treat!

They were everywhere!
In the lagoons, near the boat launch, in the air, and in the Hunters Club Marsh where I often see lotus pods along the shoreline in winter.

But I was wrong.
It’s the bright white wing patches contrasting with the black back and the white underbelly that stand out for me, then I notice the brilliant red head.
Not common to see in our area, I was lucky to find the Red-headed Woodpecker this month at a nearby metropark.
