While bright colorful warblers catch everyone’s attention in our area during spring migration, one of the birds I’m always looking for in spring is the White-crowned Sparrow.

It’s a beautiful large gray sparrow, with contrasting bold white and black stripes on its head.

Some populations are known to overwinter in our area, but I rarely find one during our winter months in Michigan.

I’ve seen a White-crowned Sparrow in southeast Michigan once in mid-November 2018.

Photo of the Week: Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center

Finally after two years, the John D. Dingell Jr. Visitor Center at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge in Trenton, Michigan officially opened to the public this past week.

Due to the COVID pandemic, the outside areas at the refuge were opened to the public in late 2020, but the visitor center had been closed.

Photo of the Week: Bald Eagle Duo

As I drove near the entrance of the Magee Marsh parking lot, vehicles ahead of me slowed down and eventually stopped.

Not unusual at this wonderful wildlife area on the southwestern shore of Lake Erie, north of Oak Harbor, Ohio.

Magee Marsh is well known for its wildlife.

Especially for the flights of waterfowl and migrating songbirds seen each spring.
