What I Found Interesting: June 18, 2025

An alternative to Google Maps, how America’s forgotten second national park became a state park, and beavers returning to Portugal after more than 500 years are among the interesting stories I’ve read and enjoyed in the past month.

Photo of the Week: Beaver Damage at Belle Isle State Park

When news spread beavers had returned to Belle Isle in 2012, after almost 100 years away, people were excited!

An indicator species for successful wildlife management and habitat restoration, beavers returning to Belle Isle was positive news for Detroit River water quality.

Unfortunately, recently, the beavers’ hard work on the island has resulted in many trees being damaged and felled.
