Skype’s Latest Feature Lets Anyone Join Chat, Even Without an Account

I’ve been a fan of Skype for a long time. It’s an easy way to chat with friends and family, keep up with their latest news, and share what I’ve been doing.

And with Skype for Web and support for mobile devices, as well as desktop, I could start conversations on whatever device I chose.

But there’s always been something that’s kept some friends and family members from chatting with me: they didn’t have a Skype account.

And they didn’t want to have to sign up for one.

Invite Anyone to Join a Skype Conversation

That all changed today with Skype’s announcement of their latest feature: you can now invite anyone to join a Skype chat with a unique link.

And they don’t need a Skype account.

You can send your chat invite by email, SMS, Twitter, Facebook, Messenger, or WhatsApp.

Once they receive your invitation and select the unique link, they’ll use Skype for Web to join the conversation with you or join a group conversation via messaging, voice, or video calls.

All they need to do is enter their guest name to enter the conversation. No requirement to set up a Skype account or install an application.

Launch and Rollout

Today you can start, share, and join a conversation only in the United States and United Kingdom with:

  • Skype for Windows
  • Skype for Mac
  • Skype for Web

If you have a Skype account and have Skype installed on your mobile device, you have the ability to join a conversation with Skype for Android, iPhone, or iPad.

Within the next few weeks, Skype plans to automatically roll out support around the world. Future plans include the ability to start conversations by sharing a link on mobile devices.
