Join us at our next Refresh Detroit meetup Wednesday, October 19, 2016 as we host an evening of Lightning Talks.

Our October meetup features our members sharing their knowledge, insights, and tips you can use in your work projects.

Five speakers will share their experience and lessons learned on a specific topic. The meetup is for any web professional, whether you’re a:

  • Project manager
  • Technical writer
  • User experience professional
  • Information architect
  • Content strategist
  • Digital marketer
  • Social media expert

Enjoy an evening with fellow web professionals as you learn something new, or discover a different approach for your work projects.

What are Lightning Talks?

Maria Gosur discusses design
June 2016 Refresh Detroit Lightning Talks

Lightning talks are an opportunity for people to share their knowledge in a short talk, demo or presentation, anywhere from five to 10 minutes long, in a casual setting.

Members share a recent project, demonstrate a new tool that improves productivity or talk about an improvement in their workflow.

No slideshow is needed, it’s up to you how you want to present your talk.

The idea is to share something you’re passionate about. And given our group has a wide range of people working in different fields, that covers a lot of topics!

As I described in a post earlier this year:

The talks are short, the speaker needs to get to the point quickly.

Forget about long introductions, or multiple slides describing your background and experience.

Lightning talks are not formal presentations, with tons of preparation time.

I love lightning talks because I learn about our Refresh Detroit members and the work they do.

Lightning talks are great conversation builders and help build our Refresh Detroit community of people who learn from each other.

And for many of our members, it’s their first presentation.

Meetup Information and Registration

Our Lightning Talks meetup is Wednesday, October 19, 2016 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Pre-registration ($5.00 cost) is required.

We’re meeting on the third floor of Grand Circus in downtown Detroit (map and directions).

We’ve already booked one speaker, Vince Speelman who is a front end developer at TED.com. His topic: The Nine States of Design.

Want to join Vince as one of our lighting talks speakers? Great!

When you register to attend, answer the question about whether you want to speak. Include your topic and short description.

Or comment in the meetup event description what your topic will be, along with the title and short description of your talk. Added bonus: speakers attend for free.

Parking

Parking is available at the Detroit Opera House parking garage on Broadway for $8 (unless there’s a special event). The Detroit Opera House parking garage is a short walk up Broadway and around the corner from the Grand Circus space.

Street parking is also available on Washington Boulevard (one block west of Grand Circus, a short three-minute walk, depending on where you park).

Note: before 6:00pm, you are limited to two hours of parking on Washington Boulevard; after 6:00pm you can park for four hours.

You’ll also find parking in several nearby parking structures and parking lots.

Another note: many downtown lots and structures only take cash.

Special thanks to Grand Circus for graciously hosting our event. We appreciate their support of Refresh Detroit and our events.

See You October 19!

Our lightning talks meetup in June 2016 was a big hit, members commented how much they enjoyed it.

The topics were great and I’ve learned a lot. I also enjoyed the conversations at the end. I look forward to seeing everyone in the next meeting

I hope you’ll join us!
