Quick Tip: YouTube Videos and Creative Commons License

When you upload a video to your YouTube channel, did you know you had a choice of license for the video?

By default, YouTube assigns their Standard license to all videos you upload.

What many video creators don’t realize: they have another option, using a Creative Commons license.

Which allows you as the content creator to grant someone else permission to use your work.

On YouTube, you have the option to mark your uploaded videos with the Creative Commons CC BY license.

What to Know About Creative Commons Licenses on YouTube

While not well known, the Creative Commons license for YouTube videos was announced in 2011.

Everyone who uploads a video to YouTube can use the Creative Commons CC BY license.

A few things you need to know about YouTube videos:

  1. By default, all uploaded videos are marked with the Standard license. You need to take steps to change to a Creative Commons CC BY license when you upload a video to YouTube.
  2. You retain your copyright when you mark a video with a CC BY license
  3. Creative Commons CC BY license can only be used if your video is 100% original content
  4. When you mark your video with a Creative Commons CC BY license, other creators can use, remix, and edit your video

Wrapping Up

When you upload a video to your YouTube channel, you can choose to change the license from the YouTube Standard license to a Creative Commons CC By license.

Which grants the right for other YouTube creators to reuse and edit that video, as long as your video fits the requirements for a Creative Commons CC BY license.
