Created of painted steel, the zebra sculpture catches your eye as you travel Ford Road in Canton Township, Michigan.
Zebra Herder 1 & 2 is the work of retired iron worker Mike Sohikian of Genoa, Ohio. It’s one of more than a dozen installations on Ford Road, part of the 14th Annual Sculpture Exhibit in Canton Township.
After doing some research, I learned a bit more about Sohikian.
He’s in his early 70’s (as of 2020) and has always loved art. He began his formal art career in 1995, when he was in his mid-50’s.
His paintings and sculptures are in over 400 art collections across the United States.
Many of his works have been installed as part of the Midwest Sculpture Initiative, which promotes outdoor sculpture in towns throughout the Midwest.
Sohikian’s work reminds me of the works by Tom Lakenen who also works with scrap metal.
