As I discovered this past week, the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge has new a mural painted by Anishinaabe artist Hadassah GreenSky in the lobby of the John D. Dingell Jr. Visitor Center in Trenton, Michigan.
High on the wall adjacent to the welcome desk, the colorful Zaagiing mural was dedicated on December 20, 2025 with a celebration, water ceremony, cultural presentations, jingle dress dancing, song, and storytelling.
I spent time talking with refuge staff to learn more about the mural and learned GreenSky grew up in southeast Michigan and is now based in Detroit.
Greensky painted the mural with the assistance of two youth mentees, Brooklyn Christie and Anna Christie.
The International Wildlife Refuge Alliance and refuge worked with GreenSky since May 2025 to develop the mural design.
