Yesterday, I was on one of over 13,000 participants in October Big Day, an international event for birdwatchers to watch and report all the birds they see in a single day.
I had high hopes of reporting 50 or more bird species for my October Big Day.
Sadly, rain and thunderstorms were predicted throughout the day in southeast Michigan, northwest Ohio, and southwest Ontario.
The rainy weather didn’t matter much to this Killdeer, which I found standing near a puddle of water at Willow Run Airport in Van Buren Township, Michigan.
In between storms, I managed to see 31 species and over 600 birds for the day.
Wish my numbers were higher, but the weather forecasters were 100 percent correct in their predictions yesterday.
With a goal of 5,000 bird species from 125 countries, October Big Day was a great success!
Checklists are still coming in.
But as of today, at 10:40am Eastern Time, October Big Day has 5,613 species, with 29,593 checklists reported by 13,692 participants.
