Photo of the Week: Great White Trilliums at Miller Woods

Spring is one of my favorite times of the year to visit Miller Woods in Plymouth Township.

If you visit the woods in late April through May, you can easily see the dramatic changes warmer weather brings.

Each week brings a whole new crop of blooming spring wild flowers and trees and shrubs leafing out.

Last week, sunshine shone on the forest floor at Miller Woods. Mayapples were just starting to bud out into their umbrella shapes.

Dutchman’s Breeches, Wild Onions, and Yellow Trout Lilies could be seen everywhere.

This week, dappled shade covered the forest floor as understory shrubs and tall beech and maple trees begin leafing out.

White Trillium are appearing on the western portion of the trail and Trout Lilies are nowhere to be seen.

Squirrel Corn has taken over Dutchman’s Breeches as the dominant flower in bloom.

And there seems to be even more Wild Onions.

I like to go birdwatching in early spring at Miller Woods. You can get great views of warblers before the trees start leafing out.

But given the warm weather last week, and the rains coming into town today through Tuesday, I suspect my birdwatching time at the woods will be limited.
