Photo of the Week: Sweetbay Magnolia

In the in-between time of late summer and fall in Nichols Arboretum, when summer flowers are done blooming and tree leaves haven’t changed to their brilliant reds, golds and yellows, you might not think to walk through Magnolia Glade.

The more than two dozen southern Appalachian trees and cultivars from around the world are long past flowering, with their large white, pink, and yellow blooms.

But if you take a moment to step off the nearby boardwalk and take the trail to the east into the glade, you’ll see clusters of bright red seeds standing out against the large glossy leaves of the Sweetbay Magnolia.

If you live in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area, have you taken a stroll through Magnolia Glade this fall?
