Photo of the Week: Summer Rainbow from the Backroads

My first rainbow of the summer!

And I almost didn’t see it.

We were out birding and got caught in an unexpected rain shower.

It was late evening, and the sun reappeared low in the sky.

With a golden glow across the landscape, we decided to take a slower route home on the dirt backroads rather than the faster paved road.

Good decision, as we caught sight of a beautiful Great Egret flying across the road toward the setting sun.

Its white wings seemed to be touched with a soft golden light.

We stared at the egret in flight and my eyes caught another color in the sky.

The beautiful rainbow in the east.

If you look closely, you’ll notice some raindrops in the photo and a bit blurriness; I took the photo through the car glass windshield.
